The Importance of Scripture

reading-gods-story.JPG

In June a book on discipleship I have been honored to co-author with Philip Nation and Michael Kelley will be released. The book is built on what the Scripture teaches us about discipleship but it is informed greatly by a massive LifeWay Research project designed to discover how people in churches mature in their faith.

One of the simple discoveries in the research is the importance of a believer investing time in the Bible. I know this to be true personally, and the research strongly shows that growing believers continually encounter the grace of God through His Word.

Most likely you have multiple Bibles in your house; big ones, little ones, camouflage ones, men’s ones, women’s ones, ones for leaders or fisherman, etc. Growing believers move from having a Bible in their house to planting the Bible deeply in their hearts (Psalm 119:11).

So today, I am giving away 5 copies of Reading God's Story. It is a daily, chronological Bible that helps the reader understand the grand narrative of Scripture.

To enter, simply comment below and let us know how your life has been impacted by Scripture. I'll pick five winners at the end of the day.

WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK

Scripture helped to open my eyes to my need for Christ which in turn changed everything about who I am and what I'm about. I am coninually moved to become more like Christ through opening up the Word of God

Scripture constantly draws me back to God. Whenever I'm feeling lost, scripture points me back in the right direction. Also, the more I read scripture, the more I find myself repeating scripture over and over again throughout the day to keep me on track.

I wouldn't know who Jesus really is apart from Scripture. I don't worship the Bible, but I wouldn't know who to worship apart from the Bible!

I memorized scripture as a kid and only read parts even as an adult. Three years ago, I decided to read the entire Bible in a year and it has completely changed my life. I no longer see God as a genie to pull out of my pocket when I have a crisis. I have learned and am beginning to grasp the sacrifice of Christ in a way that never impacted me before. Also, reading through the OT, I gained an appreciation for a God that has not changed throughout all of history. It put me in my place and now I live in submission to Him. Awesome.

Scripture helps stir my affections for Jesus Christ. It helps me see how different parts of Scripture point to Jesus Christ and meditate on who Jesus is to the point of worship and delight. Scripture also helps to send me out to be a minister of the gospel to people who haven't heard or believed.

Scripture draws me nearer to God whether I am feeling lost that day or just am continuing my journey as a Christian. I have been a Christian for the past year and am learning the Bible and different scriptures; making the Bible part of my daily life is helping with this. :)

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17

God breathed both man and scripture into existence. What better way for sinful man to reconnect with the God of Creation than to inhale scripture?

Without scripture, I would not been drawn to ministry and the calling God placed on my heart to reach teens for Christ. Scripture helps me share messages with teens that are relevant and impacting to their lives. For me, I learn something for my life and how rich the Bible is no matter how much you read it,

Over the years, I have grown from feeling like I HAVE to read Scripture to LOVING the Word of God and desiring to feast on it. It has become my very life.

I didn't go to church when i was younger, but a Preacher living across the street from us had me remember one verse when I was 10yrs old, John 3:16. That verse has always been with me. It wasn't until I was an adult in my 30's, that I actually started reading the Bible. I know now that God has always been with me, watching over me, and has been calling me since I was young.

I was very blessed to have a group of Godly men disciple me early in my Christian walk. They taught me many things including how to read and study the word of God. After 30 plus years I am still amazed at how alive the Bible still is to me. I can honestly say that right now I am more excited about studying the Word than I have ever been. Love what Bengel says, "Apply yourself wholly to the Scriptures, and apply the Scriptures wholly to yourself."

Scripture opens my eyes to how big God is and constantly shows me how inconsequential humans can be. But God continues to choose us to be a part of His bigger picture. Scripture challenges us to not think as society does but instead to set ourselves apart from the world. God's Word encourages us to live in the freedom we can only find in Christ.

Scripture has been so much for me....history, faith, courage, sadness, understanding....oh the list goes on. I don't have a chronological bible but have all other kinds. This is surprising that I don't since I am one of those people who like to put things in order! but back to how I've been impacted...this is the one thing I know that I can rely on to give me the answers that I need to whatever the situation may be.

The greatest impact on my life from scripture so far has come from Isa. 1:18,That regarless of what I had done, where I had been or even what I had become, God can make me as freshly fallen snow...white as wool. Praise Him!!

All of Scriptures points to Christ and His redemptive work. The more I read and understand the grand narrative, the deeper my affections for Christ becomes. This is truly helpful for changing my heart and strengthening my faith in Him.

Growing up Catholic we never read the Bible, ever. It was a big decorative book we kept in the house and put it high and away on a shelf, a funny way of really showing our relationship with God. I was 26 when I heard the most clear Gospel presentation in my life, went out the next day...to a Lifeway...and bought my first Bible. It was a Sports Devotional Bible that looked like a football, which is silly since it was more aimed towards youth. I knew though as a sports fan, this type of Bible would help me understand what the Bible had to say. I started in John and kept going, it changed my life.

My life has been impacted by Scripture in many ways; it encourages me, it strengthens me, it has transformed my life, and it continues to condemn and convict me every day. Thanks!

How has my life been impacted by scripture? Scripture changes everything... It's just you and God, no middle man needed. Scripture taught me who God/Jesus/Holy Spirit really are. How to live my life when the world sends a different message about how to act and react. Scripture committed to memory comes forth to help and comfort in times of great upheaval and grief when you can't make sense of the world. Scripture is God breathed and life-giving....... our love letter from God.

Scripture makes me know that God is real and I can know Him.

I have found that Scripture contains the answer for every situation I face in life. It's not always evident in a black and white sense but the principles contained in Scripture work in all of life's circumstances.

The Word of God is living! I need it hid in my heart and fresh on my mind so that I mind walk in God- glorifying ways. A regular diet of feasting upon His word enables me to grow in the grace and knowledge of my Savior, Jesus Christ.

Scripture is truth to live by. The more I am in the word the more Jesus gets into me.

Holy Scripture is a constant corrective to my selfishness and foolishness. It reveals Christ and the heart of God. When I am spiritually cold it is used by the Spirit to call me back to seeking our Lord's heart. when I am slipping into sin it rebukes me. When I am being subtly sucked into the way of this world it corrects me.

Well Scripture has helped me a lot in the last year. My fiancee' left me and my life was crumbling. I started to dig deeper into scripture and pray more. I dug deeper into scripture to try and figure out my life. As all this was happening my ex-fiancee' never stopped going to the same Church but she dated another man. After a few months and praying and digging deep into my Bible I decided to get Baptized. On May 1, 2011 I was immersed and accepted Christ. In the mean time I dug deaper into the scriptures and started helping with the youth at Church. Around August and many months of studying my Bible, praying and being involved in my Church my life had changed. I felt much change and was getting lot's of praise from everyone at how I had changed and that they could see it. Around September of 2011 the Love of my Life saw this change as well. We are back together and have been serving and involved in our Church. We volunteer with the Youth. And all thanks to Scripture and me deciding to read and study it.

I have enjoyed reading the Bible my entire life. I read it daily, over and over, in every version I can get my hands on. Every time I read a passage I see something new that I hadn't seen before and learn something new, as the Holy Spirit teaches me, that I didn't know before. It is an amazingly beautiful experience to meet God in his word, and to join with Him in this blessed spiritual communion. What a gift He's given us!

Reading Scripture teaches me who God is, why He made me, how He wants me to live, what happens when I don't, how much He loves me ... it gets me thru life, the good and the bad and is the very reason we are here! It is hope!

The study of scripture allows God to begin to transform my life.

Thank you so much for offering books on how to understand scripture for free. I grew up in church seeing the scripture as a heavy burden and was constantly working to obey it. However the gospel overwhelmed my soul and I realized that Jesus had fulfilled it all for me (Matt. 5:17) which frees me up to passionately pursue after Him. I love the scriptures now as I realize more and more that it's God trying to line me up with how everything is supposed to work. So I love studying the scriptures because not only is it God's story of redemption through Jesus Christ, but it also reveals more and more of the nature and character of God.

Scripture satisfies... To the extent that If the Bible was a pile of Nathan's and I a well-rested Joey Chestnut, records might fall.

Starting in June of 2011, I decided that for the first time I wanted to read through the entire Bible in a year. I have continued to do so, and am now a little over half way through. The Lord has taught me so much through His Word during this, and my dependance on it has become ever so evident in my life, even to the point of feeling off if I miss a day. Many days I sit to read and wished I could just stay in the Word for hours. Not only that, since I am reading chronologically, it is extremely interesting to read the story through and being able to make connections that in previous years I have never been able to make before. The Lord has done a major work in my life, and I am already planning on taking July-December this year to read through it again in 6 months this time!

There are so many individual life events where God's Word shows up. Some that are evident--and some that we don't notice until well after the moment has passed. I think one of the ultimate impacts of Scripture is seen in Heb 4:12, "piercing to the division of soul and of spirit...discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." It exposes us to ourselves and shows us our need for a Savior.

A few days after becoming Christians, 26 six years ago, my wife and I began experiencing a very difficult trial. James 1:2-4 was especially comforting to us and is still our favorite.

My son, 25, and I recently began studying the book of James together using Doug Moo's commentary as a guide. Last week we covered that passage and I was able to tell him of our early trial as new Christians and how God was faithful to us.

As of recent years Scripture has become of utmost importance to me. I can't imagine life without knowing God. And that's what the bible is all about, knowing Jesus. As much as a person can pray, without having Gods word they won't truly know God. I've heard people say I just want to love Jesus, but how can you love someone whom you don't know? The other day in my small group we talked about different aspects of the world of God, one being that it's the only book we can read for the rest if our lives. I'm sure at best a person can read their favorite book around six times before it loses it's charm but the word of God is different precisely because it is the word of God Himself and it is living and active. When you love God you love his His word. The word of God impacts me deeply every moment of my day. What's blows m away the most is that the Word became flesh in Jesus Christ!!

God's Word is so humbling. It instructs and transforms my heart (ouch!)and reminds me of my need for Him. Love to be reminded of how I need Jesus :)

Scripture has done so many things in my life. I've lost more loved ones in my lifetime than I would wish on anyone, the most recent being my week old nephew, Wyatt, this past July. Anytime I feel like I can't do things on my own, I know that I can turn to the scriptures and find something that will help, some little nugget of help and hope that can get any believer through the toughest times. I can feel the different person I am now that I rely on the Word, and it's a much better person than I ever thought I could be.

The Scriptures introduced me to Jesus and they maintain my relationship with Him. I have always felt a sense of awe that we can know God ever since I heard my first stories from the Bible when I was young. Now at 62, one would think the Bible would be mundane for me by now. But, not so. The awe is still there whenever I consider the Scriptures.

The Bible has changed my life. I enjoyed the stories as a child, but it wasn't until I became an adult and read, "...and the Word was with God, and the Word was God..." that I began to really understand the importance knowing scripture was to our relationship with Christ. If he is the Word, we must know the Bible to know Him. It's not just a story, it is a life, THE Life.

Having just finished Simple Church, which I hope to use in the congregation I serve, I noticed one thing. The churches you reference seem to be either Baptism or independent. Be a Lutheran congregation (LCMC), we have always put a great deal of emphasis on the litugical calendar for worship & preaching. Knowing the lack of liturgy or litugical consideration in the churches you reference, extreme in some cases, do you have any advice about how we can move to becoming a Simple Church without abandoning some of these important elements in the life of our fellowship of believers? I would greatly appreciate a response. Thank you.

The Scriptures give me food for thought each day, things to ponder, and a pathway to understanding God's will for the day. The more I read the more I can see what God sees when He sees me. I am humbled to know the God of all things loved me so much.

Scripture is the blueprint God gave us for living fuller, richer lives through Christ Jesus. It is the single tangible constant we have to lead and draw us closer to him. I wouldn't be half the man I am today with out it. It has changed not only the way I think but also the way in which I live for him.

Jesus did not pick and choose His way thru life. He took it on @ full speed and teaches me how to live with all the difficulties and joys that our journey produces. Willingness to accept counterintuitive teachings, such as forgiveness are a life long lesson. Stories detailing the fruits of those labors are what excite me to keep reading the Bible (many great stories in the Bible). Learning the various and deeper facets of being a better Christian are what keep me in prayer for greater wisdom.

My adventure with the Scriptures began with Scripture memory (Topical Memory System) and Bible studies of the Pauline epistles. In recent years, I have started to see more of the fuller picture of the Big God story, how it intertwines with mine, and how—gratefully, with a huge sigh—the story's not over yet.

As the pastor, I want to study and review the process to be a simpler church with church leadership, but don't want to simply have everyone read Simple Church and then review it like a class when we meet monthly. Any ideas?
